Ex-Cebu lawmaker elected AIPA official

MANILA -- The 31st General Assembly of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) recently approved the appointment of former Cebu congressman Antonio Cuenco as AIPA secretary-general during its organizational meeting in Hanoi.

The Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) was held in the assembly, during which it approved four resolutions, among them: seeking to strengthen women and children's social welfare and development, roles of women in economic recovery after the financial crisis, women parliamentarians in law-making, and increasing women representation in politics.

During the opening ceremony on September 21, the delegation-leaders of the member-countries, special observer and the Asean secretariat expressed their deep concern over climate change, disaster management and pandemic prevention.

Other concerns were human resources development, the disabled, and facilitating the implementation of the AIPA resolution on preventing and combating the proliferation of illegal drugs and ways to improve the activities of the AIFOCOM. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
