Red Lion, Stag vie for NCAA MVP plum

MANILA –The looming rivalry between San Sebastian and San Beda in the 86th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball transcends borders as both squads battle for the top individual honors.

Defending champion San Sebastian knocked out Jose Rizal University in the last stepladder semifinal game last Friday while mighty challenger San Beda roared to an immaculate 16-game sweep to board the early flight to the Finals.

In these two occasions, the energetic Calvin “The Beast” Abueva and high-leaping American behemoth Sudan Daniel outshone teammates and opponents to make themselves the top two contenders for the Most Valuable Player award.

Daniel, a 6-foot-7 slot man, leads the league in shot blocks by a wide margin with a stellar norm of 4.4 a game and was second in rebounds with 11.4 while averaging 10.9 points and nearly an assist and a steal per assignment.

On the other hand, Abueva lorded over the rebounding department with 12.6 while placing third in scoring with 16.3 points. He also had an average of 1.6 assists, a steal and a shot block in an all-around performance that boosted his stock. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
