Hundreds of dead ‘drunk’ fish prompt Senate probe

MANILA -- Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri has called for an investigation into the hundreds of dead fish in Laguna de Bay that smell of alcoholic drinks.

A national daily reported on Thursday that residents of Sta. Rosa town in Laguna have noticed hundreds of dead fish reeking of alcohol and floating on the lake.

The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) is already investigating whether the fish kill was caused by a chemical spill from nearby Tanduay Distillers, which burned down last week, the report said.

Zubiri said if chemicals were deliberately discharged into the lake, firms responsible for the fish kill could face charges for violating the Clean Water Act.

“That's why I am calling for an investigation by the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources to look deeper into what have caused the fish kill,” he said.(Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
