MANILA -- A lawmaker is calling on the Aquino government to carefully study the disastrous effects of large-scale mining before opening up the country to more mining companies.
Bayan Muna party-list Representative Neri Colmenares said that offering the country’s remaining mineral resources to more mining companies in exchange for additional government revenues is “courting more environmental disasters."
“The Palace seems oblivious of the disastrous effects of large scale mining to the environment and to the communities of people who are suffering while mining companies extract the innards of the lands their ancestors have been caring for. A lot of indigenous communities in the country are living proofs of the devastation of extractive mining operations can do,” Colmenares explained.
Earlier, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources had ordered the Mines and Geosciences Bureau to identify areas, which could be placed under the mineral reservations classification, in its effort to raise more revenues. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
