Shellfish ban on 8 Bataan towns lifted

THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) lifted the ban on consuming shellfish in eight towns in Bataan province.

A radio report said Thursday that residents in the towns of Limay, Mariveles, Orani, Orion, Abucay, Pilar, Samal, and Abucay can now gather, sell, and eat shellfish.

The BFAR lifted the ban after the towns' coastal waters were already free from red tide toxin.

Earlier, the BFAR and Agriculturist Art Matias of Bataan confirmed that towns in Bataan province are positive of red tide toxin.

Red tide is harmful to health as humans can become seriously ill from eating oysters and other shellfish contaminated with it.

Health authorities said: “A person who has consumed shellfish affected with the red tide toxin may experience any or a combination of the following symptoms: facial numbness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulty, abdominal cramps, and weakness or paralysis of one or more extremities.” (Sunnex)
