NDF hits ceasefire violations

MANILA -- Accusations of violating the bilateral truce between the Aquino administration and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) continues as the rebels’ political arm criticized the government for supposed errors.

The 18-day holiday ceasefire ended last Tuesday with the National Democratic Front (NDF) listing six violations as of January 3 this year.

* The arrest of arrested NDF-North Central Mindanao officer Pedro Codaste and his companions at a checkpoint in Bayugan, Agusan del Sur last December 17.

* The deployment of a special commando unit to target New People’s Army forces and sympathizers along the boundary of Aguinaldo town in Ifugao and Natonin town in Mt. Province last December 16.

* The killing of cultural activist Stephen Lester Barrientos and the arrest of NPA rebel Christian Bascos and 2 others in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro last December 23.

* Military operations in Barangay San Pedro, Mulanay, Quezon and Barangay Busuk-Busukan in San Narciso last December 23.

* Combat clearing operations by troops of the 61st Infantry Batallion in 6 upland barangays in Tapaz, Capiz and Calinog, Iloilo starting December 21.

* The arrest of New People's Army commander Edwin Brigano last January 1.

All these, however, were earlier denied by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), saying the CPP has actually committed two violations during the period—a bloodless encounter in Occidental Mindoro and the ambush of a militiaman in Negros Oriental. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
