Phivolcs: No lava flow from Bulusan

PHILIPPINE Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Renato Solidum said Tuesday that there is no indication of lava flow yet in Mt. Bulusan.

He, however, advised residents to keep out of the designated four-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the danger posed by sudden ash explosions.

The Phivolcs, in its 8 a.m bulletin on Tuesday, also reported 16 volcanic earthquakes in Bulusan during the past 24 hours after its recent ash explosion.

Two of these, which occurred at 9:12 a.m. and 10:27 a.m. Monday, were recorded as explosion type earthquakes.

Phivolcs reported that the first explosion of Bulusan, which was heard up to 10 kilometers away in the town of Juban, Sorsogon, has produced a grayish ash column that rose up to about three kilometres above the summit before drifting to the southwest.

Presence of ash deposits in the towns of Irosin and Bulan in Sorsogon were confirmed and traces of ash deposits were also reported in the municipalities of Juban and Magallanes, also in Sorsogon, and in Masbate City, Masbate.

The volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1, which means that the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow. (Sunnex)
