Binay tasked to decide on Marcos burial

MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III chose Vice President Jejomar Binay to decide on the proposal to bury the remains of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).

“I’ve talked to the VP (Vice President) and I asked him if he could be the one to decide on the case,” Aquino said in an ambush interview during an event in Pasig City organized by the Yes Foundation in line with the Edsa People Power anniversary.

The President earlier inhibited himself from the issue avoiding to be branded as biased.

“Whatever I will say they would always look at it as bias,” he said.

He said Binay “has strong opinion” about the matter but assured that he “will give it a fair hearing.”

Aquino talked to Binay before he flew to China last week to appeal for the commutation of sentence of three Filipinos in death row.

The proposal to bury Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery came following the burial of former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Angelo Reyes amid controversies surrounding his death.

Reyes killed himself at the height of the investigation into the alleged “pabaon system” in the AFP. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
