Property tax credits proposed for urban farmers

MANILA--Senator Manuel Villar Jr. has proposed Real Property Tax cuts for homeowners who use parts of their houses to grow fruits and vegetables.

Under Villar's Urban Farming bill, residents who plant on their roofs and yards will get a tax credit of P10 for every square meter planted.

He said the measure would help encourage urban gardens and ensure that people live in a sustainable and healthy environment.

"According to studies, proliferation of urban farming is beneficial to the urban community as the vegetation absorbs water runoff by storing water from rain, improves air quality, reduces noise pollution, and mitigates urban heat," he explained. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
