CBCP exec to public: Don’t create problems over hoax text messages

AN OFFICIAL of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called on people responsible for the text messages that warn of possible nuclear radiation from Japan reaching the Philippines to stop causing public panic.

In a phone interview, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Social Communication and Mass Media (ECSCMM) Executive Secretary Fr. Francis Lucas called on those sending “hoax” messages to use the mass media to help instead.

“False warning on nuclear fallout does not help. Be the solution, not the problem. Be the difference in a crisis situation,” said Lucas.

“Please avoid using media, like texting irresponsible and false reporting that aggravates the seriousness of the incident,” he furthered.

On Monday, several text messages began circulating warning the people to remain indoor, close doors and windows, and swab neck skin with betadine in order to avoid the nuclear radiation from Japan.

Another text message warned of skin burns if they go out and get wet by radiation-filled acid rains.

This has forced government officials and the World Health Organization to repeatedly ask the public to stop panicking over the false text messages and instead rely on proper authorities.

The government repeatedly stressed that radiation levels in the country remain normal and that the leaks will not pass the Philippine territory since the wind continues to move eastwards.

Instead, the Church official said it would be better if the power of mass and social media would be used to relay message of sympathy.

“Let us use all communication channels to dissipate the pain and fear of the victims as a sign of our caring support,” said Lucas. (AMN/Sunnex)
