Senator: 3 Pinoys’ executions offer painful lessons

MANILA -- Senator Francis Escudero said Wednesday that the executions of three Filipino drug mules in China offer "a painful lesson" for both migrant workers and the government.

He said Filipinos should learn not to let themselves be used for illegal activities.

Escudero said the government should also learn that Filipinos jailed abroad should be given "the best possible legal assistance from the beginning."

Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano earlier criticized the government for seeming to go all out for Filipinos on death row, but doing little before they are sentenced.

Senator Pia Cayetano, meanwhile, said that aside from offering sympathies to the family of the three drug mules, "we must also look into the circumstances that have brought about the situation."
