Yap: Diversity

LAST August 6, 2011, Alejandro’s once again hosted the monthly LGBT Party in Cebu called PiNK. First of all, what does LGBT mean? LGBT is an acronym that refers to the diversity of the gay culture. It stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender/Transsexual. The lesbian of course is a homosexual woman. The gay is the homosexual man. The bisexual is the individual who goes both ways. The transgender is the individual who thinks he or she is born in the wrong body. Simply put, a person who has an important part of the male anatomy who feels like a woman (or the other way round) is identified as “transgender” or “transsexual”. But the transsexual yearns for sexual reassignment surgery while the transgender does not feel it necessary.

What’s quite interesting and shocking for me is that during the course of my online promotions for the event, several gay men have asked me what LGBT meant, and I have patiently answered all of their questions one by one. It made me realize that there are quite a lot of people who belong to our own community who still have a lot to learn about it.

The main goal of the Pink Party is to promote unity amongst the gay community of Cebu.

The gay culture is composed of a diverse group: gay men, lesbians, bi-sexual, and transgendered/transsexual individuals. The party aims to gather the LGBT community of Cebu in one venue where they can interact and get to know more about how different yet similar we all are from each other. The party was also attended by visiting tourists who found out about the event online and the gay-friendly, heterosexual crowd, which I think is great since it is proof that many of the heterosexuals not just merely tolerate the LGBT community but, more importantly, accept it.

The second Pink Party managed to gather so much more people than the first. And that is reason enough to continue doing it. DJ Japhete spun the night away with his awesome dance mixes while Cebu’s very own YouTube sensation Amanda Vu’s performance was the highlight of the night.

What’s important is we have to know that we should not be ashamed of being ourselves.

The Pink Party is a celebration of pride and diversity. We must be proud of who we are and accept each other for our uniqueness. The Pink Party is only the beginning of much bigger things to come in the future. This is where it all starts. Every small step counts.

The next Pink Party will be on September 3, 2011. Check out the pictures from the Pink Party last week.
