THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles opened its title retention campaign on a bright note, pulling a clinical 68-55 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers in the High School Division of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball Tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Recruit Errol Pastor proved his worth as an addition as he blended well with coach Rommel Rasmo’s holdovers and led the scorers of the defending champions with 13 markers.
It was Pastor and swingman Jed Cedrick Colonia who suited up for the Batang Gilas U-16 team and went to work early as they scored 6 and 5 points, respectively, to lead SHS-AdC to a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Preventing the Magis Eagles from pulling away was Harvelle Peligrino who scored seven in the second period.
Travis Jelour Matua then joined the scoring spree as he delivered six points and Colonia added four to help the Magis Eagles build a 39-27 lead at the end of the first half.
USPF tried to make an impact in the third period when Ain Obenza scored nine of his 17 points.
However, his lonesome effort failed to break the defense of the Magis Eagles who got their acts together and held Obenza to just one point and his scoring partner Harvelle Peligrino to just three to march away with the victory.
Colonia and Mantua scored 11 points each for the Magis Eagles while Peligrino and Obenza scored 17 points each for USPF’s season debut.
