Negros quake death toll up to 51

THE number of fatalities from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Negros Oriental rose to 51 on Monday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in its 7 a.m. Monday bulletin, recorded one more body from La Libertad town.

With this, the fatalities include 24 in Guilhungan, nine in Jimalalud, three in Tayasan, one in Bindoy, two in Manjuyod, two in Ayungon, and 10 in La Libertad, all in Negros Oriental province.

The NDRRMC also recorded 112 people injured and 62 others missing.

The 6.9-magnitude tremor, which occurred at 11:49 a.m. last February 6 at five kilometers northwest of Tayasan town, was set off by movement in an undersea fault.

The quake damaged several structures in various areas in Central and Western Visayas and affected thousands of residents.

The NDRRMC said the estimated total cost of damages incurred by both passable and impassable roads and bridges, public buildings, and flood control structures was pegged at P383,059,000.

It said the total number of population affected in the quake is 63,899 families or 320,165 persons. (Sunnex)
