Buglasan Festival 2015 opens with ‘Fiesta sa Nayon’

NEGROS ORIENTAL -- Buglasan Festival, one of the country’s grandest and most anticipated festivals, is set to launch on October 16 with a huge barrio fiesta celebration dubbed “Fiesta sa Nayon” as an opening salvo.

Participating barangays from Dumaguete City and municipalities of Sibulan, San Jose, Dauin, Valencia or Metro Dumaguete will start its festive grand parade exhibiting the unique and indigenous fairs and foods along the main thoroughfares in Dumaguete.

Each barangay is expected to bring a lechon and other foodstuffs to be displayed ala "boodle fight" at the Freedom Park.

As early as last month of July, preparations have started for this year’s colorful Buglasan Festival of Festivals with more than 100 events calendared for a two-week long celebration in October.

Governor Roel Degamo announced last week that at least 12 competing festivals from different local government units will present a showdown street dance on October 23.

The festivals bring together the best contingents of the province’s established festival for a unified celebration and present its distinctive indigenous elements and legendary stories.

The Negros Oriental Government funded this year’s Buglasan Festival with a total budget of P5 million for the two-week Buglasan celebration slated on October 16 to 25.

Degamo said that of the total budget, P2.5 million is intended to subsidize each local government unit participating in the Booth and Festival competitions.

He said the expected influx of local, national, and foreign tourists will bring in cash flow and economic surge during the Buglasan period.

Negros Oriental Tourism Council (NOTC) chair and Buglasan co-director Nick Elman said the events will be spread out in five venues at Freedom Park, Sidlakang Negros Village and Rizal Boulevard, Macias Sports Center and Robinsons Place to decongest the huge crowd.

Elman said portalets will be placed in major sites of the festival to keep the areas clean and sanitation, including the implementation of anti-plastic and no smoking ordinances during the Buglasan period.

This year’s Buglasan Festival annual celebration banners the theme “Building Friendship Worldwide Opening Development and Opportunities." (PIA)
