Cebu traffic office adopts new parking scheme

THE Cebu City Traffic Office (CCTO) has again modified the parking scheme at Fuente Osmeña rotunda.

Starting yesterday, vehicles have to follow the parallel parking scheme on the outermost lane at Fuente Osmeña. The adjacent lane has been designated as drop-off and pick-up zone.

CCTO Executive Director Rey Gealon said that the new scheme is meant to decongest traffic around the rotunda.

The diagonal or carousel roadside parking scheme occupied more space although it allowed more vehicles to park, he said.

He said that diagonally parked vehicles with long bodies, like pickup trucks and sports utility vehicles, encroached on the space allotted for moving traffic.

Gealon said that City Mayor Michael Rama has approved the parking scheme.

Business establishments around the Fuente Osmeña rotunda were also informed of the change.

Gealon said that the first day of implementation of the new parking space went well.

“Fewer vehicles can park in the area but then it’s a matter of balancing interests... we have to sacrifice the interest of a few to uphold the interest of the greater public,” Gealon said.
