LIBERAL Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas admitted yesterday that he supports the reelection bid of Rep. Gerald Anthony V. “Samsam” Gullas (Cebu, first district), a member of the Alayon Party.
He evaded answering questions about San Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy, an LP member who plans to run for the same post in the 2016 elections.
“May the best man win,” Canoy said when asked to comment on Roxas’ admission.
Roxas was in Cebu yesterday to lead the opening of the agri-machinery and equipment expo and agricultural products exhibit at the Capitol. He was joined by Gov. Hilario Davide III, Dr. Romulo Davide, Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, Provincial Member Gigi Sanchez and Rep. Luigi Quisumbing (Cebu, sixth district).
Gullas was also present and wore a yellow shirt with the print, “Anak ni Mar Roxas.”
During his visit in Talisay City, Roxas urged those who support him to unite.
While addressing members of people’s organizations in Talisay City, Roxas said that a united party “together as one” can ensure that the “daang matuwid” or corruption-free ideal of the present administration will be sustained long after the term of President Benigno Aquino III.
Aside from a possible face-off between Canoy and Gullas, Talisay City Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante will reportedly challenge LP partymate Mayor Johnny de los Reyes in 2016.
Davide said that the LP has yet to discuss the possibility of declaring the first district of Cebu as a “free zone” in 2016, which would allow partymates to compete against each other.
De los Reyes said that while they are glad that Roxas is supported by many, they hope that the former local government secretary would give priority to those who have been loyal to him.
“Mura ra gud na og magbuhi ka og anak. Lahi gyud kung gikan gyud sa imung tago-angkan kaysa anang gi-adopt ra nimu dayun mutagad ra kung naay pangayoon (It’s like having children. The child you sired is different from the child you adopted who only approaches you if he or she needs something),” de los Reyes said.
He urged Roxas and Davide to make a statement on which bloc they will support in next year's elections.
