Eastern Samar quake damage rises to P133M

MANILA -- The damage to public infrastructure caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that jolted several parts of Visayas and Mindanao last weekend rose to more than P133 million, authorities said Wednesday.

In its 6 a.m. report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the estimated damage, which included infrastructure in Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, and Tacloban City has totalled to P133,658,500.

The NDRRMC also reported that at least 20 bridges and roads in the Eastern Visayas Region, the Caraga Region, Dinagat Island, and Surigao Del Sur were partially damaged by the earthquake.

The agency added that at least 82 and 157 houses were totally and partially damaged, respectively.

Several public infrastructures in Surigao Del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan Del Sur were partially damaged including municipal facilities and school buildings.

The NDRRMC also said the total number of injured climbed to 10 but the death toll remained at one, identified as Emelita Ubalde, 44.

As of Wednesday morning, the quake had affected 5,839 families or 28,869 people in Surigao del Norte, Western Samar, and Eastern Samar, according to the NDRRMC. (Emmanuel Louis Bacani/Sunnex)
