Still undefeated

DEFENDING high school champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles brought out the best of the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers before they pulled off a 73-64 win in the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. high school basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

The Magis Eagles displayed their dominating form early on, but UV was always at the heels of the defending champs, trying to fend off a blowout match.

With only one player, Raul Jancork Cabahug, to count on in both offense and defense, coach Abel Bongcaras shuffled his rookie-laden squad to find a complement for Cabahug’s fiery game.

While UV was having that dilemma, SHS-AdC coach Rommel Rasmo turned to his top players Andrew Velasco and Errol Pastor to do the damage.

After leading 21-8 in the first quarter, the Magis Eagles looked headed to a one sided win after erecting a 56-39 lead entering the final quarter.

It was at this moment, when Cabahug proved his capability as he led UV’s comeback effort by scoring 13 of his game-high 31 points.

However, SHS-AdC did not buckled down as Velasco and Pastor alternately answered the Lancers point for point to keep a safe lead and seal their third straight win.

On the other hand, UV dropped to 2-2.

Velasco topscored for SHS-AdC with 20 points and Pastor added 11. Cabahug was the only UV player to score in double digits with 31 and also had 12 rebounds.

SHS-AdC also dominated UV in the other facet of the games, and had more rebounds, 37-24, assists, 10-4 and had less turnovers, 21-11.

In the other high school results, the University of Southern Philippines Panthers improved to 3-1 after a 70-40 rout of Don Bosco Technology Center Greywolves, which suffered their fourth straight loss.

Another rout

Ain Obenza scored 17 and Vincent Lequin added 12 for the winning team.

The University of Cebu Webmasters reacquired their winning touch after handing the Cebu Institute of Technology-University an 83-64 bashing.

Froilan Mangubat again led UC to victory as he tallied his third double-double performance of 26 points and 15 rebounds. He also had three assists, six steals and a block. Luigi Gabisan contributed 14 points and Jayson Abejo added 10 as UC improved to 2-2.

Jasper Berezo was the lone double digit performer for coach Andot Fuentes with his 26 points.
