Holding of event on or near Sinulog parade route prohibited

CEBU CITY – Organizers of the 2013 Sinulog celebration have banned the holding of any event both on the major and interior roads in the city on January 20 so as not to worsen traffic.

They’ve also asked the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to focus on and deploy more policemen in “problematic areas” during the activity to ensure peace and order.

In an interview with Sun.Star Cebu Saturday, Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director Ricky Ballesteros said bar owners, business establishments or other groups are prohibited from holding any event on the day of the Sinulog grand parade.

Doing so, he said, will worsen the gridlock in the city’s streets.

Heavy traffic is expected during the grand parade as roads, particularly those included in the carousel route, will be closed for the use of dance contingents, floats, higantes and puppets.

Permit required

The carousel route, which is estimated to be 5.2 kilometers, covers General Maxilom Ave., Osmeña Blvd., P. del Rosario St. and Imus Road.

Ballesteros said those who really want to hold an event on January 20 will have to secure a permit from the City Government and from the City Traffic Operations Management. However, he doubts their request will be granted.

Ballesteros said they’ve also relayed their request to CCPO officer-in-charge Senior Supt. Mariano Natuel to closely monitor Fuente Osmeña, Imus St. and Juana Osmeña St. among others.

“Daghan man gud kaayo ug maginum diha sayu sa buntag pa unya daghan og hubog (Many people drink in those areas and some of them are already drunk early in the morning) and we don’t want to risk the safety of our dancers, especially out-of-town contingents,” he said.

Still on sale

The Sinulog grand parade, which is still two weeks away, will culminate with the Sinulog dance competition inside the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

Some 700 white tickets, the most expensive tickets for the event, sold out two days after they started selling these at P700 each, Ballesteros said.

He said those who want to watch the dance competition should buy tickets at the SFI office inside the CCSC.

He said they’re still selling yellow tickets for P600 each and green and pink tickets for P500 each.

Ballesteros said they printed 2,200 yellow tickets, 1,700 green tickets and 1,700 pink tickets.

They based the number on the seating capacity of the CCSC grandstand.

Ticket revenues will form part of the amount needed for the holding of the 2013 Sinulog celebration, which is pegged at P35 million.

Ballesteros said their preparation is 80 percent complete. (Sun.Star Cebu)
