Council approves request on CCTVs

COUNCILORS approved last Monday the request of Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) asking the Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) to provide an additional closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda also moved for other possible sponsors of CCTVs.

Councilor Edison Bilog, along with other councilors, is asking for the power utility to provide additional lighting to areas where there are already existing CCTVs to make the equipment more effective.

Councilor Isabelo Cosalan also called for the provision of CCTV and lighting as an essential component in coming up with a City Development Plan.

BCPO Director Jesus Cambay Jr. said the CCTV installation will help police find solutions to cases of crime against property and other felonies.

Cambay said the CCTVs are effective in preventing crime if there is a person monitoring on a 24-hour basis, while it is effective in solving crimes when the equipment has a higher resolution to be able to identify the criminal.

He said crimes solved due to CCTV include theft, carnapping, bukas kotse, abduction and vandalism, among others.

The police director rationalized the need for an outer and inner ring in the monitoring of areas with crime incidence as well as other public places.
