Tight security urged for ambushed cop’s wake, burial

LA Castellana Police Chief Gary Alan Resuma has requested for tighter security for a policeman, who was killed with eight other persons in an ambush in Barangay Puso, La Castellana last January 27.

The cadaver of Police Officer 1 (PO1) Richard Canja will be brought to the La Castellana police station for a wake before he will be buried on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at noontime.

Resuma made the request during the Provincial Joint Peace Security Coordinating Center meeting at the La Castellana municipal hall Thursday.

Resuma aired his concern after what he said were observations made during the burial of the five other fatalities last February 2, 2013 that there were suspicious looking individuals who mixed themselves among the crowd.

He further cited intelligence reports that another cop is being targeted by the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels who recently admitted responsibility for the ambush-massacre.

He pointed out that there are ambush-prone areas along the way from the upland barangay to the town proper.

He also requested augmentation at the La Castellana police station while the wake is being held, as the family and relatives of Canja aired their apprehension amid threats against the members of the La Castellana police.

Earlier, reports revealed that Canja was the main target of the NPA rebels, because of his alleged organization of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPATs) which were said to be effective in the counter-insurgency campaign in the said barangay. (TDE)
