Northwing to host 31st SAC-SMB awards

THE SM City Northwing will host the 31st Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC)-San Miguel Brewery, Inc. (SMB)-Cebu Sports Awards for the first time next month.

Among this year’s list of awardees are a football powerhouse that went undefeated and a golf team that surprised the favorites in the country’s biggest golf tournament.

Don Bosco Technological Center’s grade school football team, which stretched in undefeated run in Cebu for three years and swept the Palarong Pambansa and Milo Little Olympics national title, is one of this year’s major awardees for football.

The Cebu Country Club (CCC) men’s team, which wasn’t even consider a darkhorse for the PAL Interclub championship division title last year, leads the golf awardees for surprising the other heavyweights in their title run in Davao last year. CCC is set to defend its title in home soil next week.

Aside from the two teams, this year’s major awardees also include world champions Johnriel Casimero and Donnie Nietes, who are set to defend their belts next month, PBA top pick June Mar Fajardo, Milo Marathon champion Mary Grace delos Santos, Cebu’s latest grandmaster Enrico Sevillano and paralympian Bea Riza Roble.

As the major awardees they are all candidates for the Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced on awards night.

Other major awardees this year are Daniel Noval for athletics, Trixie Mary Lofranco and Reynaldo Combate for arnis, Jerie Pingoy for basketball, Michael Aldeguer for boxing, John Mier for cycling, Mae Lzoada for dance sport, the Cebu Football Association, Gio Gandionco for golf, Victor Cui for mixed-martial arts, Danel Jay Tormis and Stephen Jaca for table tennis, Mikeala Calamba for taekwondo and Justin Liam T. Chiongbian for triathlon.

On the other hand, the University of Southern Philippines athletics team, which ended

the University of Cebu’s dominance in local athletics wil lget a citation, along with the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, which wrested the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. title from the University of Cebu.

David G. Lim Jr., who has taken over his father’s mantle, will also be cited for his achievement in autocross, along with Jess Garcia and Derek Arculli.

Cebuanos who made the national age group football teams--Aranxa Trebol, Cheska Toledo, Paolo Pascual, Eddie Alivio, and Cebuano members of the Little Azkals will be cited, along with men’s team members Patrick Reichelt and Ray Jonsson.

Others who will receive citations are the Philippine arnis team, Lorna Olarita for athletics, SWU high school team, the University of San Jose-Recoletos men’s team, the UC women’s doubles team for basdminton, the Cebu Dolphins for baseball, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, the UV-16-Under team, Hernanl Escocio, Dawn Hynric P. Ochea, Arnie Christian A. Padilla, Felixberto G. Jaboneta IV and Gregory Slaughter for basketball, Jade Becaldo and Mike Abria for beach volleyball, Warren Kiamco for billiards, Dondon Cardona and Dennis Delgado for bodybuilding, Genesis Servania, Romnick Magos, Jason Pagara, Milan Melindo, Rocky Fuentes and Rey Bautista for boxing, Allan Pason, Kyle Sevillano, Vic Glyzen Derotas and the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association for chess, Dancesports Team Cebu City, Wibert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Caneda for dancesport, Glenn Ramos, Oliver Colina and the University of San Carlos college team for football, the CCC ladies team for golf, Mikaela Silverio for gymnastics.

Runner Mary Joy Tabal will aslo get an award along with training partner John Philip Duenas and trail runner Merlita Arias-Dunkin.

The rest of the awardees are Joaquin Fernandez for judo, Juan Antonio Carcel for karting, Cary Bullos and Yaw-Yan Ardigma for mixed-martial arts, Pepo Rubi and BJ Pepito for motocross, Zandro Fajardo for mountainbike, the Cebu Lady Dragons for rugby, Rhey Jay Ortouste for sepak takraw, Abellana National School, Salazar colleges of Science and Institute of Technology for softball, Anthony Linn Navarro for swimming, Zach Sanchez Araneta for speed-skating, Jerny Kaye Pepito for table tennis, Tony del Prado and Team Cebu City for taekwondo, kara Salimbangon, Jana Pages and Jan Godfrey Seno for tennis, Elmer Clarabal, Rochelle Tan, Mendel Lopez, Justin Liam Chiongbian, nina Francesca M. Villaba for triathlon, Team Suzuki-BMR, Anacleto Flores for underbone and the USC men’s and women’s teanms, USJ-R boys and girls teams, SWU, Catmon, Jusabelle Brillo and Raphril Aguilar for volleyball.
