More fire lanes in Camp John Hay in the works

EFFORTS to prevent forest fires in Camp John Hay are being undertaken by its estate manager John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC).

JHMC president and chief executive officer Dr. Jamie Eloise Agbayani said their Forest Management Program secured some 35,000 square meters of fire lines to prevent the occurrence of forest fires.

Agbayani said fire lines are important deterrent for forest fires as Camp John Hay currently hosts 30 percent of remaining forest cover in Baguio City.

Based on latest inventory, JHMC forester Alberto Banatao said there are at least 115,682 trees inside Camp John Hay based on the last tree inventory conducted in 2001, which he claimed has grown to their estimates at 120,747 trees as of last year composed mostly of Benguet pine.

These fire lines, Agbayani stressed, will be able to protect the trees inside Camp John Hay as fire fighters will easily tap on these lines for water.

The JHMC Board of Directors also signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish additional 35,000 square meters of fire lines last February 11.

She said these fire lines will cover some five barangays within the Camp John Hay.
