P59-million worth of marijuana destroyed in Benguet

MANILA -- About P59-million worth of fully grown marijuana plants, seedlings, stalks and seeds were destroyed by combined elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police (PNP) in Benguet, an official said Friday.

PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac Jr. said the operation, called "Oplan Berdeng Ginto," was conducted from February 15 to 18 in the municipalities of Kibungan and Bakun.

In his report to Cacdac, Director Ronald Allan Ricardo of PDEA Cordillera Administrative Region (PDEA-CAR) said the three-day operation resulted in the destruction of 257,500 fully grown marijuana plants, 27,800 marijuana seedlings, 105,000 grams of dried marijuana leaves, 28,000 grams of marijuana stalks and 11,000 grams of marijuana seeds with a total value of P59,012,000.

The illegal hemps were confiscated from 48 plantation sites with an estimated aggregate land area of 52,530 square meters.

No cultivator was arrested during the operation. (SDR/Sunnex)
