MAD run returns for third edition

THE Make A Difference (MAD) Run returns for its third year on March 10 with the aim of making races in Cebu affordable again.

The run, organized by Mary Ann De Los Santos in partnership with Barangay Lahug, will feature the 5K, 10K, 16K distances. It will start at the Lahug Barangay Hall.

De Los Santos and Tinago Barangay Councilman Joel Garganera said the event will be affordable for the public.

“We don’t want to label it as cheap because it’s sort of derogatory but rather inexpensive because it is still a quality race. We believe that health and wellness should not be expensive,” said Garganera.

The entry fee for the three categories is P150 and the two said and they want to bring back the old rates from the skyrocketing fees that are becoming a trend now.

“I’m proud that MAD is back with affordable fees and with more runners joining longer distances now, 16K is a very conservative distance,” said De Los Santos.

The run was first held in 2009 and revived in 2011.

Registration areas are at Runnr, Cebu City Sports Center, Citigym and Lahug Barangay Hall.

Meanwhile, the Lahug Barangay Council will suggest an amendment in the running ordinance of the city council.

De Los Santos and Garganera will lobby for the full exemption or decrease of permit fees required for organizers to secure in holding races.

Both believed that these fees should be lowered because it affects the registration fee, which the organizers pass on to the runners.

For this race, which has 16K as the longest distance, the group paid P10,000 to secure the permit fee from the Cebu City Sports Commission.
