A GROUP of Cebuano golfers were in Manila for the 43rd Golden Tee Invitational Tournament of the Manila Golf & Country Club in Forbes Park upon the invitation of club member friends. Tournament rules required that a club member invite a non-member as tournament partner. Thus Manila Golf’s Richie Garcia had for his partner Cebu Country Club president Montito Garcia (they made it to the winners’ circle); former PNB chairman/Sun Savings Bank founder Francisco Dizon had lawyer Julius Neri; Manila business executive Choy Cojuangco partnered with businessman Eddie Alegrado; Dr. Mike Celbran with Dennis Garcia; Rudy Cuenca and David Lu; Teofilo Eugenio and Nonoy Tirol; and Cebu businessman Douglas Luym (a Manila golf member) with Vic Yuvallos. They were all there during the awards dinner which had a Toyota Altis as the major door prize. Too bad none of the Cebuano golfers got it.

A recent Manila happening, which I also attended was the College of the Holy Spirit Centennial Gala at the SMX Center at the Mall of Asia complex. It was a celebration of the 100 years presence in the Philippines of the nuns known as the Servants of the Holy Spirit. It was also reunion time for us who studied at the then Holy Ghost College. Among our our co-graduates were Centennial chair Vicky Pineda Garchitorena, and the soft-spoken Gloria Manalang Angara, wife of Sen. Ed and Mom of senatorial aspirant Sonny A.

It is the time of the year when people finalize travel plans, and the perfect time for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Cebu Pacific Air to announce their partnership in luring families, barkadas, and couples to Singapore. Over lunch with media friends at Radisson Blu Hotel, Sherina Chan, STB area director for the Philippines and Brunei, detailed the come-ons of the Lion City. Meanwhile Michelle de Guzman, Cebu Pacific’s assistant manager of CorpCom, spoke of the airline’s very affordable rates thus earning the recognition as the “Low Cost Carrier of the Year.”

Joining them were representatives from Wildlife Reserves Singapore, Marina Mandarin, DUKW Tours and the Singapore Flyer.

Among the newest added attractions in Singapore are the recently completed Gardens by the Bay, featuring domes in controlled temperatures to give shelter to a diverse range of plant life from every continent (except Antartica); and the newly-opened River Safari featuring eight of the world’s great rivers (Mekong, Ganges, Nile, Mississippi, Amazon, Yangtze, Congo and Murray in Australia). The rivers and their surroundings host 5,000 aquatic and terrestrial animals representing 300 species. Sherina is proud to say that the River Safari is Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park. She further adds that Singapore has something for everyone—tours, night life and shopping for barkadas; art, culture, romantic dinners and spa interludes for couples; theme parks, entertainment and a variety of eats for the family, and all else that spells f-u-n!
