Leyte promotes aggie, environment protection, tourism

THE Provincial Government of Southern Leyte is now promoting the sustainability of agricultural, environment protection and tourism program.

Roger Mercado, Southern Leyte lone district representative, said the entire province of Southern Leyte goes with the progress of the entire country, wherein tourist arrivals booms and infrastructure projects particularly the national roads has been 100 percent completed.

"The Provincial Government has a sustainable program intended for the promotion of agriculture, environment protection and tourism respectively," he said.

According to him, the main reason why these programs are given focus is for the province to be self sufficient in rice production and livestock.

"We are doing this to twist the cycle we have now. Instead of becoming a consumer province, we wanted to become an exporter of our own produced product," he said.

Mercado said the different agricultural products that are available in the province include coconut and abaca. "We are also in focus on planting mango, jackfruit, pineapple and even rambutan as well as palm and rubber trees."

Mercado said the government continues its clean and green program for tourism purposes.

"The creation of the zoo and the opening of zipline in Agas-Agas Bridge help the Provincial Government in encouraging visitors to visit Southern Leyte," he said.

Mercado said that planting of trees and focusing on their solid waste management problem has been considered by the Provincial Government in pursuing their environment protection program.

In order to become successful on all these programs that the Provincial Government has implemented, Mercado encourages the entire populace of Southern Leyte to cooperate with them.

"We hope that everybody would cooperate on all our programs. We also are doing our best to make our province as investor and child- friendly, no smoking place, logging ban area, mining free zone, and sea protected area," he said.

Mercado added that the implementation of these programs somehow help the community find employment. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
