Warriors eye first-round sweep

THE University of San Carlos Warriors will go for a sweep of their first-round assignment as they play the University of Cebu Webmasters in the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college tournament at the Cebu Coliseum at 6:45 tonight.

Fresh from a 79-69 win over title-favorite University of the Visayas Green Lancers, the Warriors will try to defuse the run-and-gun game of the Webmasters, who are trying to improve their position going into the second round of the double-round robin elimination.

During the pre-season tune-up games, the Warriors imposed their dominance over the Webmasters but USC is usually a slow starter against weaker teams.

Coach Britt Reroma is going to rely once again on the scoring prowess of Shooster Olago and Ian Tagapan and on the rebounding prowess of Charles Pepito, who has become a rebounding demon in the past few games for the Warriors.

Sophomore guard Justine Dacalos, Melvin Botuhan, Graciano Puerto Jr. and Clint Suelto will try to rally the Webmasters against the bigger and taller Warriors.

In the opening match, the USC Baby Warriors will try to remain unbeaten as they go up against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers at 5:15.

The Baby Warriors is one of two teams that are still undefeated in the high school division with three wins.

It would be a tough climb for the Baby Warriors as the Baby Panthers are already on a winning roll after losing to the defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles last Aug. 4. USPF is currently at third place with a 3-1 win-loss card, while the Baby Warriors are at 3-0.

The Magis Eagles is the other unbeaten team with a 5-0 card.
