‘Jealous’ lover shoots student, then himself

AFTER learning that his girlfriend was falling for someone else, an engineer allegedly shot her in his bedroom early yesterday morning. He then shot himself, a witness told the police.

They were both found dead on the second floor of a house on C. Padilla St. in Barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City past 7 a.m.

Engr. Meljhon Niel Olmedo, 28, was found clutching the hair of his girlfriend Jenny Lyn Avila, 20, while a gun lay close to his other hand.

He fired the gun at Avila’s right temple, before shooting himself, the police learned from Olmedo’s teenage cousin, who also slept in the same room the night before.

Homicide investigator SPO4 Alex Dacua said that the police will ask the minor to speak up as the lone witness only after he recovers from trauma.

Olmedo’s father, Melchor, also heard two gunshots from upstairs. He rushed to his son’s room only to find its walls and floor spattered with blood.

The mother, on the other hand, said that the couple had been arguing over someone who was reportedly starting a relationship with Avila.

Avila, a college student who majored in hospitality management, reportedly confessed this to Olmedo after they attended Mass last Sunday.

Naa man gud na siya’y ka-char-char ra gud (Someone else was flirting with her),” Kizia Balolong, a friend of Avila’s, said.

Olmedo, who had been paying for Avila’s school expenses, got mad. His parents admitted they heard the couple fighting over this matter last Sunday night.

Olmedo and Avila were neighbors, but the latter reportedly often spent the night in Olmedo’s room.

The two broke up last week, when Olmedo found out about what was happening, but they reunited last Saturday.

Two empty shells, believed to have come from a .45 firearm, were found in the crime scene.

Dacua said that Olmedo’s body will undergo a paraffin test to check if he was indeed the one who used the gun.

Survived

Avila wasn’t the only 20-year-old woman who got shot in the last 48 hours over a romance that had gone awry.

But Thialfe Sayaboc Adlawan, who was shot in the chest in her home in Sitio Grayrocks, Barangay Pangdan, Naga City last Sunday morning, was rushed to a hospital and survived, said the investigator SPO3 Alex Nable.

Police identified the suspect as Hydelizo Diez Jr., who reportedly blamed Adlawan for his breakup with her sister.

Adlawan was already asleep past midnight but was jolted awake when she felt someone’s hands choking her.

Adlawan fought back, hitting him with a blanket.

The suspect then allegedly drew his gun and shot Adlawan in the chest.

He fled, but hours later turned himself in to the police.

Relatives and neighbors rushed Adlawan to South General Hospital in Naga City, but she was later transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
