MIAA: Flight diversion due to bad weather

CLARK FREEPORT -- An official of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has clarified that the diversion of nine Manila-bound flights to Clark International Airport (CRK) over the weekend was due to bad weather.

MIAA public relations officer David Faustino de Castro stated this in his letter to Sun.Star Pampanga in reaction to an article saying that the local flights were diverted to Clark due to air traffic congestion.

“While there are, indeed, occasions when air traffic in Manila becomes unwieldy, please be informed that flight operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) over the weekend – including Friday – were disrupted by harsh weather condition,” De Castro said.

A number of flights might have opted to divert to Clark but not necessarily and immediately due to air traffic congestion as mentioned in your article, De Castro said.

The MIAA has put in place a number of measures to address the growing concern of air traffic – the recent one being the activation of Runway 31 for departures which allows for simultaneous movements on the two runways at the NAIA.
