Petition urging villages to provide bike lanes to start

A PETITION asking barangay officials to provide bike lanes is set to start today, the eve of the International Earth Day celebration by environment protection groups.

Marc Canton, Movement for a Livable Cebu (MLC) co-convenor, said the petition was one of the issues raised during their focused group discussions and surveys.

He said they will collect signatures from people attending the Earth Day Green Festival.

The signed petitions will be given to barangay officials, who will be asked to create bike lanes and pedestrian lanes.

Canton said the lanes will also help ambulant vendors cross Mango Ave. safely.

“They pass through the wrong side of the road. The petition will be sent to barangays so they can formulate local solutions for mobility and transportation,” he said.

The MLC is an organization composed of urban poor residents, professionals, youth groups, religious groups, business owners, property owners, people with disability and residents who oppose the construction of flyovers in their area.

The group advocates and promotes sustainable living practices.

Festival activities

The festival, said MLC co-convenor Joel Lee, is a series of activities set in one day that shows “practical and simple solutions toward sustainable living.”

Activities include the Cebu Green Lungs Bike and Board Tour for bicycle enthusiasts and skateboarders, Green Film Screening, workshops, Vinyasa yoga and a Green Hotel Tour of West Gorordo Hotel.

“Different sectors and NGOs (nongovernment organizations) were invited to simulate a livable sustainable city,” Lee told reporters yesterday.

For mobility and transportation, the group has organized a bike ride in Cebu City. The group has also organized a presentation on the use of paper briskets and rocket stoves and will showcase zero carbon and permaculture practices.

The activities are organized by MLC with the Cebu Coalition for Food Security, the University of the Philippines Psychology Corps, Sidlak and Ananda Marga Wellness Center, among others.
