Editorial: Make that list

NINE more days and it’s election day. It’s time to make that list so that every vote will count.

In this issue, we are ending our series of special reports on the 2013 election with the complete list of Senatorial and Davao City Council candidates, simply because, they’re not readily available in the campaign propaganda we are seeing nowadays.

As the race draws to an end, it’s each to his own, including attacks and counter-attacks on partymates, at least that is what is claimed by candidate Loren Legarda who attributes the coming out of Dabawenyo Louie Biraogo to question her undeclared property in the USA as a demolition job by one of her partymates.

But then, with just a little over a week before election day, traditional tricks of traditional politicians are always played out; the press conference of Legarda to cry unfair while at the same time throwing her own mud back among them.

It pays indeed to listen and listen hard to the messages that are spoken beneath what we can hear. In these messages, an intelligent voter can discern who is truly for public service and reform and who are actually trapos pretending to be clean.

In the local scene, it pays to choose wisely as well lest we be subjected to yet another three years of empty rhetoric. The city is growing very fast, we need people with vision to craft and amend our laws such that the growth can be sustained along with its resources and not in exchange of its resources.

Three years from now, when the councilors we have chosen will be seeking re-election, Davao City will have more traffic, more buildings, more people, we cannot afford to let the city’s legislative body just operate as it has been operating in the past, the manoys and the corrupt included.
