Nearly 2,000 prisoners to cast vote

AN OFFICIAL of the Bureau of Corrections said Tuesday a total of 1,868 inmates who have yet to be convicted of several crimes will exercise their right to vote on May 13.

BuCor Director Franklin Jesus Bucayu said the inmates come from the agency’s seven penitentiaries, namely: New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte, Sabisyan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Panabo Davao and San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City.

The prisoners will vote manually in a special precinct to be set up inside the jail facilities.

This privilege was also experienced by many inmates in the 2010 presidential elections. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
