Cebu to host Asean U16 club competition

CEBU will host the four-month long Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) - Frenz Under-15 Asean Champions Trophy this Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Just a few weeks after hosting an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) interclub competition, Cebu was nominated by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) to host this league-style club completion for the 15-Under age group sanctioned by the Asean Football Federation body.

Rizal Memorial Stadium was delisted because the venue is still under renovation.

This tournament is spearheaded by FAM and will have teams from the 11 Asean nations clash every Saturday in a double-round robin, home and away match until September.

FAM partnered with the Frenz United Football Academy of Pahang, Malaysia, and also made ties with regional airline carrier, Air Asia.

The Philippines will be represented by the Global Football Club under head coach Anto Gonzales. They are set to face Frenz Malaysia B for the league’s kickoff matches this Saturday after the semifinals of the 13th Cebu Interclub Football Cup Men’s open.

Global FC and Frenz Malaysia B are in Group B with Frenz Indonesia, Myanmar Mandalay Academy, Laos Toyota Academy and Brunei Under-15.

Group A will have Frenz Malaysia A, Singapore NFA, Vietnam PVF Academy, Phnom Penh Crown Academy, Thailand Chonburi Academy and Timor Leste U-15s.

The top two teams per group will face each other in a crossover semifinals in a home and away format.

Although this is a club competition, most of the teams are powered by national team members.

Core members of the Global FC are former members of 14-Under national team.

A 40-men lineup is required in the whole tournament but Global was able to submit a list of 22 players that will play this Saturday.

Newly appointed national 16-Under team manager Stanley Villacin said that they will still have to add more players to complete the squad.
