What's up with Ms. Bacolod Allysa Marie Villarico?

THOUGH she was not chosen as one of the top ten candidates out of the 47 hopefuls in the Miss Philippines-Earth pageant last Sunday, May 19 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City, UNO-Rian Miss Bacolod Allysa Marie Villarico takes it in stride.

"To all who've given me their support, words will never be enough to express how THANKFUL I am. To all the people whom I didn't even know but still cheered for me last night, thank you! I hope I did give a good fight," she posted in her Facebook account.

With her friends flooding their posts on her Facebook wall which expressed their support to this beautiful lady, it's hands down that, indeed, Villarico gave them a satisfying performance.

But after representing the city in Ms. Philippines-Earth 2013, the question remains, "What's up with Ms. Bacolod?"

"I am very blessed to be given the chance to represent our city in a national competition. For now, I think it would be my last pageant. I will probably focus in having a corporate career this time, and I'll be coming back in my hosting stint in Kapamilya Mas Winner Ka, ABS-CBN Bacolod's local game show," Villarico said in a phone interview.

Being a candidate in the Ms. Philippines Earth made her an advocate for Mother Nature.

When asked about the learning she gained as an entrant, she candidly said, "I learned a lot about our environment. I learned that each of us has responsibilities as stewards of this planet. I also learned a lot from our environmental seminars especially when we watched the film 'The Cove'. It opened my eyes to the real condition of our Mother Earth."

"I was able to promote our city, especially now that we have implemented City Ordinance 562, which bans the use of plastic sando bags, and the province of Negros Occidental as well for its quest to become the next organic food bowl in Asia," she added.

Villarico received two minor awards and one major award from Ms Philippines-Earth 2013's sponsors. For the minor awards, she was chosen as Ms. Froehlich by Froehlich Tourism Inc. and Ms Jorivim by the Jorivim Apartelle. She also bagged the major award Ms. Casino Femme from Casino Femme sponsor.

She had joined other esteemed beauty parades before she made her way to the prestigious national pageant. The first one was the Miss Teen Philippines Western Visayas 2007 where she brought home the crown. After that, she was hailed as Miss UNO-R 2008, an annual celebrated pageant of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R), where she graduated with a degree of BS Mass Communication.

She was also named as Ms. Maskara 2011 2nd runner-up where her hosting talent was discovered. She was crowned as Lin-ay Sang Negros 2012 which made her advance to Ms. Philippines-Earth 2013.

When asked about her driving force in acing the pageant arena, she replied, "My inspiration is my family and friends. They're the reason why I keep on moving. They motivate me to push myself to the limits and to do my very best because they believe in me."

No wonder that, with this strong support system, she was not only able to conquer the stage but she was also able to reach her dreams.

But for Villarico, being a Negrense is a great contributing factor as to why she was able to carry herself with graceful authority. So, for her fellow Negrosanons, she has this message to impart, "Thank you for your support, even if I wasn't able to win the crown. I've carried with me the pride of being a Negrense. I am proud that I was able to show to the whole world what a Negrense woman can do."

After all, Miss Bacolod is not just Miss Bacolod. She is the pride of the whole Province of Negros Occidental, delight of all the women who are beauty queens in their own right. She is a living proof that being in a pageant is not only about winning the crown but winning the hearts of people. (Chona M. Malinog)
