Flores de Mayo, Santacruzan ‘successful’

CEBU CITY -- The celebration of this year's Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan, that was held Thursday at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, was considered successful.

The Sun.Star website streamed live the celebration from the Holy Mass, procession of Zagala, as well as the awarding of certificates and coronation of the ladies joining the Zagala. A replay of the event can still be viewed at blogs.sunstar.com.ph/festivals.

"As we always envisioned it to happen, the Santacruzan is all about a religious activity and that it was solely devoted to give honor and glory to Blessed Virgin Mary," Msgr. Roberto Alesna told Sun.Star Network Exchange (Sunnex) Thursday evening.

"Over and above, we contained the religiosity of the event. Na-achieve namo among tuyo nga purely religious gyud ang atong activity," added Msgr. Alesna, who officiated the Holy Mass at 4 p.m. "I'm happy because the end result was the product of our efforts including the lay organizations and other volunteers."

Fr. Brian Brigoli, Parochial Vicar, said that "compared last year, there were many participants who joined the celebration," adding they had difficulty in controlling the crowd.

In Thursday’s event, Fr. Brigoli said there were no untoward incidents, adding that there were about 3,000 participants who joined the celebration.

Fr. Brigoli and Msgr. Alesna were joined by other parish priests, namely, Fr. Benjie Herrera, Fr. Joseph Aquino, Fr. Wesley Noel, and Fr. Dave Villaceran.

Fr. Brigoli also thanked the participants, parents of the children who joined the Flores de Mayo, the San Diego Dance Company, Needs and Solutions, Sunnex, and the rest of the volunteers, seminarians, parish youth, and catechists for making the event successful.

The event ended with the crowd offering flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary while singing "Adios Rayna sa Langit." Fireworks also lit up the sky, wrapping up the night's activity. (Jay Ann Clamohoy/Sunnex)
