Emergency team holds training

THE Triskelion Emergency Response Team (TERT) together with the Department of Health-Health Emergency Management and Staff (DOH-HEMS) conducted a two-day Basic Life Support (BLS) training at Sinugba House, San Jose, Tacloban City.

The training aims to add skills needed to protect and support life during emergencies.

Team manager Miguel Ian Gabrino said the BLS is a relatively short training course required of many health professionals to help revive, resuscitate, or sustain a person who is experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure of some sort. This could include a drowning victim, heart attack or stroke patient, or many scenarios where breathing or heartbeat have been compromised.

Gabrino added that BLS is often required for people who work with young children, with elderly people, or who are lifeguards, coaches, or anyone involved with people on a regular basis who could have any sort of incident.

“The primary skills taught in the BLS course include basic mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions to circulate blood,” Gabrino said.

“Typically the course consists of practicing the resuscitation exercises on a ‘dummy,’ and demonstrating correct response in role-play situations,” he added.

Some of the key points taught during the BLS training are clearing any obstructions from the airway to allow air to flow to the lungs, making sure lungs are filling with air, and ensuring blood is circulating through the body are some of the key points taught in BLS.

In the training conducted, Gabrino said they have been taught also where and when to use the BLS.

TERT is composed of member of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority whose purpose is to build leaders among men and serve humanity in accordance with their tenets and codes of conduct.

Gabrino said their duty is to assist and help citizens who are affected by natural calamities, support citizens, especially children, who are affected by any calamities may it be natural or works of man, respond immediately for a safe primary assistance to anybody who are in danger, and mostly to prioritize citizens who are in hazardous or risky places for their safety by educating them proper health and first aid.

As of now, Gabrino said that they already have 20 TERT members in which they expect more members to volunteer to join and support them this coming school year.

The Tau Gamma Phi Sigma is a fraternity and sorority established in the Philippines in which their members call themselves Triskelion. Their aim are to see a fraternity system devoid of violence in lieu of the rampant violence pervading the university campus at the time of its founding, to avoid elitism if they can, and to earnestly propagate their fraternity’s principles as their way of life.

Based on these goals, the Triskelions categorized their formal group as a ‘protest fraternity.’

The fraternity encourages its members to strive for spiritual growth and to organize socio-civic activities for the benefit of communities. It believes that it must forge its members to embody qualities of leadership, commitment, persistence, trust, integrity, respect, and vision for them to achieve academic success and personal development.

The Tau Gamma Phi is now one of the largest fraternities in the Philippines with about 800,000 registered members. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
