Extending a helping hand

A TOTAL of 70 members of the Church of God consoled the elderly at Co Su Gian Home for the Aged in Lower Cabantian, Buhangin, Davao City by donating goods and extended various cleaning services last April 25.

Incidentally, they are the only church throughout the whole world that celebrates the Passover of the New Covenant.

The saints of the World Mission Society Church of God led by Overseer Gun Hang Lee extended, once again, another commendable volunteering activity for the Passover by visiting the home for the aged and comforted its elders. The Overseer of the Church of God in Davao who prepared this event explained that the purpose of said benevolent activity was their members' commemorative love for "Passover of the New Covenant which contains the forgiveness of sins and the promise of salvation through the devotional love and sacrifice of Elohim God for humankind. So in order to deliver the love of God to the elders, who painfully live day by day battling with diseases without the care of their family, we wanted to comfort their hearts and also give warm touch to the elderly of the home for the aged."

Volunteers delivered their donated eight balikbayan boxes of goods for the elders like adult diapers, bath products, milk, biscuits, boxes of noodles, detergents and canned goods, and other commodities.

Prior to this donation, Church of God initiated and conducted donation campaign, in coordination with Gaisano Mall last April 15 (from 4pm to 8pm) and on April 21 (from 10am to 7:00 p.m.) at ground level, near Gate 5 of Victoria Plaza. And by doing this, they also received a good valuation that had contributed to the spread of a noble donation culture.

After the donation items were turned-over to the management of Co Su Gian, the members of the Church of God gave delight and happiness to the heart of elders by performing endearing dances, and loveable songs rendered by its choir. And also they put the candy garlands to all of the 27 elders in the home for the aged which were handmade by the church members containing their expression of love thru their efforts for the elders.

And the elderly who lived a lonesome life welcomed the visit of the members of the Church of God. They shed tears of joy not only for the unexpected visit and gifts but also for the way they were treated and handled by the Church of God members like a family with warm heart full of love and care that they very much yearned for.

Alicia Danyo, one of the female residents, said, "This candy garland is very beautiful and I'm happy, then I thank God that you're here and had visited us."

Reynaldo Ledesma, one of the male resident elders who enjoyed the performance of Church of God, gave thanks to the members, saying it was very helpful.

After the brief entertainment portion of the visit, the members of the Church of God extended grooming services to all "lolo" and "lola" who well appreciated a "beauty parlor-like day" when they received a pampering they said they have never experienced; and they were even provided with complete accessories for the women. Moreover, a clean-up inside and outside of the home for the aged buildings including comfort rooms was carried-out swiftly by members who worked in unity. While other members gave a day-off to the laundry woman, by doing all her laundry tasks for that day; others assisted the nurses in feeding of the elders. It was indeed a well-orchestrated massive support and volunteer activity of love which you can hardly find anywhere in the Philippines but seemed very natural and happily carried-out by organization like the Church of God.

Ruby Lopez, the manager of the institution, was teary-eyed when interviewed on how she felt while witnessing the various activities extended to their "home" and said, "I'm very happy. Sometimes I'm very emotional especially overwhelmed seeing 'Nanay'," referring to one of the elderly residents. "I'm very happy to see the different glow in their faces after they were groomed. I'm so surprised and happy, really. Excellent! Excellent job! Excellent work! I hope that this kind of charitable causes will be continued." And she delivers the word of thanks to the Church of God by saying, "I hope that we are now partners and friends of Co Su Gian. You are one of our friends in Cu Su Gian."
