Children's Village inaugurated

THE P10-million holding facility for Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL), called the Children's Village, was formally inaugurated Thursday morning in Bago Oshiro, Tugbok District.

No less than Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio graced the ceremony, smiling as she mingled with several children who took part in the program.

"Mao ni siya ang holding facility for children. Diri tong mga bata nga gina file-an ug kaso, ug kadtong sa Lamdag nga facility nato, mao tong mga bata nga dili pwede file-an ug kaso nga kinahanglan gud sila ibalik. So kinahanglan nay intervention bago ibalik sa parents," the mayor said.

The first building, which will be the holding facility, has separate dormitories for female and male.

"Mas daghan ang naa sa gawas nga problematic kesa aning makuha nato who fall sa Juvenile Justice," she said. "You also need intervention para dili na sila muabot ani nga sitwasyon."

The mayor reiterated his passion in working for children, whom she described as resilient and vulnerable.

"Children are only what you want them to become. Kanang nag dako sa krimen, mag dako gyud na sila ug criminal. Mga batang nahitabo sa maayong pagpadako, they become responsible citizens of Davao City," she said.

In her State of the City Address (Soca) delivered last June 11, Duterte-Carpio said that programs for children are on top of her priority list since she started serving as the city mayor.

She also mentioned that the Children's Village "will provide rehabilitation services to help children become better individuals and prepare for their reintegration back to their families and the community."

"This will allow our City Social Services Development Office (CSSDO) to hold the children before they are released back to their families. This is in consonance with the recently passed Juvenile Justice Ordinance of Davao City," Duterte-Carpio said.

"The National Government, through the Juvenile Justice Welfare Council and the Comprehensive Juvenile Intervention Program, has recognized the city’s efforts in championing the cause for our children, and has partnered with the City Government to further improve its programs for juvenile justice," she added.

She said it was the late Secretary Jessie Robredo who encouraged her to do something about the children who are involved in criminal activities.
