Pacific Rim opens at GMall tomorrow

THE big-budget sci-fi action flick Pacific Rim opens at the theaters of Gaisano Mall of Davao on Thursday, simultaneous with its global release.

To open today, Wednesday, is the romantic drama Before Midnight.

Pacific Rim

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Pacific Rim.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the Pacific Ocean, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes -- a washed up former pilot named Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam, Deadfall) and an untested trainee named Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi, Babel) -- who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankinds last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Before Midnight

Before Midnight marks what might be the end of one of the most enduring romances in film history, between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy).

In the first movie Before Sunrise in 1995, American tourist Jesse and French student Celine met by chance on the train from Budapest to Vienna.

The encounter incites intrigue, and Jesse provocatively suggests that Celine postpones her return to France and embarks instead on a spontaneous expedition to Vienna. In the course of their 14-hour relationship, the two share in their love for the unrehearsed and their appreciation for the unexpected as they explore in a powerful meeting of hearts and minds.

In the 2004 sequel Before Sunset set nine years later, Celine, now working for an environment protection organization, found Jesse, now a writer, at a Paris book store, the last stop on his book tour. As they have only a few hours until his plane leaves, they stroll through Paris, talking about their experiences, views and whether they still love each other, although Jesse is already married with a kid.

Now, we meet the two off-and-on lovers nine years later in Greece.

Both now have family of their own. Jesse is looking for inspiration for his next book, while Celine is working toward her dream job which was put off due to the birth of their twins. But as family and work pressures begin to slip in through the cracks, the question is raised: Can romance last in the face of life's challenges?
