Codilla’s late three saves UV

ALFRED Codilla sat mostly in the fourth quarter but when coach Gary Cortes needed his services, he delivered what was expected of him – an instant basket that saved the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers from defeat following a thrilling 78-74 repeat over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the lone 2015 Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Codilla was silent scoring only six points after three quarters and was sitting at the bench for most part of the fourth quarter when he was tapped by coach Cortes to shoot for a triple after Miguel Gastador evened the game at 74-all at the final 31.8 seconds of the game.

Codilla was left alone at the weak side when June Kent Manzo issued the pass from the crowded strong side. Codilla obliged and sank the winning triple at the final seven seconds of the game to give UV a 77-74 breather.

Coach Jun Noel burned his two final timeouts to map a winning game plan, but that all went to naught as Mart Labares was called for a five-second violation for failure to make an inbound pass.

Fortunately, Ricky Peromingan stole UV’s inbound pass but he hurried a three-point shot that was way off the mark as the Lancers grabbed the rebound that led to Miguel Gastador fouling and sending Codilla to the free throw line.

The third year Lancer point guard split his charity that was enough to give UV its sixth win in eight games.

Manzo and Josue Segumpan lead UV scorers with 13 points each. Akomo finished with 12, while Codilla added 10.
