Protest actions to greet Sona

MILITANT groups will stage massive protest actions nationwide to coincide with the fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Benigno Aquino III Monday, July 22.

Various groups will be joining the massive protest called Sona ng Bayan, which will begin at 10 a.m.

In Davao City, different groups will gather in different places: Brokenshire College (Kilusang Mayo Uno, Courage and Piston), Department of Agriculture office (Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, Farmer's Association of Davao City and Amihan), and Commission on Higher Education office (Anakbayan, League of Filipino Students, National Union of Students of the Philippines, Karatula, and Kabataan partylist).

There will also be rallies at the Jones Circle in Roxas Avenue (Gabriela and Gabriela Womens Party), Davao City Water District-Matina Branch (Kadamay South chapters), and Davao City Water District-Bajada branch (Kadamay North chapters and Water for People Network).

Bayan Southern Mindanao, in its media advisory, said from its different rally points, all sectors will converge at Freedom Park at noon.

The group will then march toward Rizal Park by 12:30 p.m. for a program.

The advisory read that among the highlights of their protest tomorrow are: the effigy burning (visual image of the US-Aquino regime), Tugon ng Bayan (Bayan will give a reaction after Aquino will give his speech), and the Sona sa Katawhan (the three-year assessment of Bayan on Aquino Regime).

There will also be opening and closing dance theater and cultural performances during the program.

Different militant groups have already conducted protests against oil price increases, rice crisis and corruption.

Aquino will deliver his fourth Sona during a joint session to mark the opening of the first regular session of the 16th Congress of the Philippines today.

"The Sona delivered by the President is a yearly tradition wherein the chief executive reports on the status of the country, unveils the government’s agenda for the coming year, and may also propose to Congress certain legislative measures," the Official Gazette stated.

It said there have been 74 Sonas, and the forthcoming address of President Aquino III will be the 75th since 1935 and the 27th since the restoration of democratic rule under the Fifth Republic in 1987.
