Museo, Ateneo to launch new edition of Davao history book

MUSEO Dabawenyo and Ateneo de Davao University will launch the new edition of Dr. Macario D. Tiu's award-winning book, "Davao: Reconstructing History from Text and Memory" on August 2 (Friday), 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Museo Dabawenyo.

The book is a fascinating look at the culture, history, myths, and personal stories of the peoples of Davao. Initially published by Ateneo de Davao University's Research and Publication Office in 2005, the book challenged prevailing notions of the city's history and dug deep into Mindanao's rich cultural identity.

Dr. Patricio Abinales of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies in Kyoto University called the book as "a major contribution to a Mindanao-wide effort of recovering our story as a people of an island that has consistently shaped the directions and shifts of its national narrative." "Davao" won a National Book Award for History in 2006. As the authoritative text on Davao's cultural heritage, it was much sought-after by scholars and lay readers alike.

The new edition incorporates updates and minor editorial changes by the author. It also features an all-new cover and improved printing and binding production. The book is available from Museo Dabawenyo, Davao Museum, Jade Bookstore, Mindanawon Institute, Philippine Women's College, and Ateneo de Davao University.

The book launch is open to the public. Please RSVP through Museo Dabawenyo at tel. 222-6011 or email to museodabawenyo@yahoo.com.
