THE Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has awarded the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) to the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte for excellence in governance.

DILG Secretary Manuel Roxas II handed over on Thursday the award to Zamboanga del Norte Governor Roberto Uy during the former’s visit to the province.

Roxas visited Zamboanga del Norte as he was the keynote speaker during the 24th Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizCon) held in Dipolog City, the province’ capital, from September 2 to 3.

The Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte also received P14-million Performance Challenge Fund (PCF) as an SGLG awardee.

The PCF is a financial incentive given to qualified local government units (LGUs) to jumpstart development initiatives that are aligned with the National Government’s programs for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), tourism and local economic development, disaster risk reduction and management and solid waste management.

Roxas said that the Provincial Government is among the 20 provinces in the country that received the award. There are 81 provinces in the entire country.

He said the Provincial Government raised the bar in good governance by maintaining transparency while providing better services to the people, encouraging investment from the business sector and contributing to the inclusive growth in the region.

Uy said they received the award since all of the transactions of the provincial government are transparent.

“We spent money according to the basic needs of the people,” Uy said.

The SGLG award is given to LGUs that demonstrate excellence in keeping peace and order, safeguarding the integrity of the environment, and ensuring investment and employment by means of a competitive yet business-friendly LGU.

The award originated from the Seal of Good Housekeeping program, which was initiated in 2010 by the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo.
