Lapu honors Shang, 19 other top tax sources

SHANGRI-LA’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa led the top 20 taxpayers honored by the Lapu-Lapu City Government last Friday night.

Mayor Paz Radaza thanked the City’s taxpayers and vowed to address problems like unpaved roads and traffic congestion, during the awarding ceremony at the Hoopsdome.

She also reiterated her call for the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) to settle its unpaid taxes amounting to P1.7 billion, saying the amount can solve the city’s shortage of classrooms.

“I seek your help in urging your fellow taxpayers to follow in your footsteps in dutifully paying your taxes,” she said in a speech. “Use your influence to convince the MCIAA to settle their obligations to the city.”

Earlier, MCIAA General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete said a tax case between the MCIAA and the City remains pending at the Supreme Court.

Radaza said her administration is working to improve the city’s roads and reduce traffic congestion. She said several road projects have been completed, including the concreting of Kagudoy-Basak road, Basak-Agus road and the Pajac-Maribago road.

Branding

For her second term, Radaza vowed to light up city streets, clean up the public market, improve garbage collection and maintain peace and order.

“Recently, we rolled out an activity to create a brand for our city. We want to aggressively market Lapu-Lapu to foreign investors and tourists. I believe we can achieve what we set out to do if we live up to the brand promise,” she said.

Shangri-La has been named the City’s number one taxpayer for six years now.

It was followed by the General Milling Corp., Taiyo Yuden (Phils.) Corp., Lear Automotive (EEDS) Phils. Inc., and Philippine BXT Corp./Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa.
