Charges filed vs 2 for selling firearms

CHARGES were filed before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office in Davao del Norte on Friday against two men who were earlier arrested for allegedly selling loose firearms.

Facing charges for violation of the Republic Act 10591 or The Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition were Gilbert Tupos Espina, 43; and Lordian Ponce Macunlay, 36, both residents of Panabo City.

Recovered from the possession of the suspects were caliber .45 pistol Colt MK IV with serial numbers 964752, caliber .45 pistol government model with serial numbers 319584, three magazines and 20 live ammunitions.

Operatives also recovered from the suspects one black sling, two P1,000 cash served as marked money, one XRM125 motorcycle with plate number XY-8019 and Suzuki Shogun motorcycle with plate number 1454-YT.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Davao del Norte in coordination with Carmen municipal police arrested the suspects in an operation fronting Centro Drive Inn in Barangay Sto. Niño in Carmen at 11:30 a.m.

CIDG-Davao del Norte team leader Chief Inspector Francis Sonza said the suspects were the remaining members of the Mohaliden Gunrunning Syndicate operating in the province. Their leader was arrested in Tagum City last July 21.

"These two [suspects] were lawfully arrested under circumstances of warrantless arrest after they were caught in the act selling, disposing and possessing loose firearms," Sonza said.

He added that the operation was conducted in relation to the CIDG's campaign against loose firearms and other crime activities in Davao del Norte.

The two suspects, Sonza said, were first brought to the nearest hospital in Carmen town for medical checkup and was then brought to their office for documentation and proper disposition.
