IN ALL likelihood, the nine-time college champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in will return to Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) final this year and claim the championship trophy. The team learned a lesson from the last year’s misfortunes for being selfish, self-centered and conceited.
The UV Green Lancers represented the Philippines in the 27th Summer Univesiade basketball tournament and suffered humiliating defeats in Kazan, Russia, against other European teams. After the nightmare in that tournament, they discovered the cause of defeats among themselves.
This year, they are perfecting the team chemistry that would hopefully lead them to the finals. The UV Green Lancers have no formidable player except for the Cameroonian forward Mike Harry Nzeusseu, who has been practicing with the team since November.
There are several rookie players from the school’s varsity Team B who have been given the chance to show their potential in the team. The plus factor is that they learned the system earlier because they have been practicing with the regular varsity members.
The players are very coachable and willing to learn and the team will have Van Halen Parmis, Bong Pineda and Sewyn Wagwag as scouts. With the full support of the administration, it is likely they will be back to the final again this year. Winifredo Eribal
