'Ekstra' to open in theaters on Aug. 14

CINEMALAYA Independent Film Festival big winner "Ekstra" will open in cinemas nationwide starting August 14, Wednesday.

Top billed by Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos, the drama-comedy film revolves around the life of Loida Malabanan, hardworking single mother who works as a bit player both on television and movies.

Santos bagged the Best Actress trophy for the said movie.

Under the helm of seasoned director Jeffrey Jeturian, the indie film also took home other awards in the annual festival. "Ekstra" was named Audience Choice in the Directors Showcase category and also won Best Screenplay Award, NETPAC Award, Special Jury Prize and Best Supporting Actress recognition for Ruby Ruiz.

The movie, which is co-produced by Star Cinema and Quantum Films, will also be part of the film outfit's 20th anniversary offering.

It will be the latest movie to be distributed by Star Cinema after "Four Sisters and a Wedding," "Tuhog," "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo," and the soon-to-be screened independent film "On The Job."

Joining Santos and Ruiz in the big screen are Tart Carlos of "Be Careful With My Heart," seasoned actors Cherie Gil, Pilar Pilapil, Nico Antonio, Tom Rodriguez, Direk Marlon Rivera, and Vince de Jesus.

Cebuano actor Richard Yap and top celebrities Marian Rivera and Piolo Pascual had special participations in the said film.
