Barrita: ‘Smart’ pigs

A RECENT study reported by the Associated Press said there's extensive evidence that pigs are as smart and sociable as dogs.

People love dogs. But they eat bacon, ham and pork chops and of course, their favorite humba and adobo, lechon and lechon kawali.

Bruce Friedrich of Farm Sanctuary, the animal-protection and vegan-advocacy organization, said people don’t eat smart animals.

They probably want people to know pigs are smart so they’d stop eating pork.

This scientists must have lifted their idea from “Animal Farm,” George Orwell’s allegorical and dystopian novel where two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, led the farm animals’ revolution against the farmer.

But they need not humanize pigs as smart animals to stop people from eating pork.

Writers, among them US Sen. George Vest, created an image of dogs as man’s best friend, but many people still eat dog’s meat.

Actually, a man’s best friend must be his own dog. Remember, the only dog that doesn’t bite the hands that feed it is the hotdog.

But let’s talk about those who are smarter than pigs. They are those who funnel their pork barrel to bogus foundations which uses the pork barrel to fund ghost projects.

The 2014 national budget still has some P27 billion for lawmakers’ pork barrel despite the recent P10-billion pork barrel scam.

Pork is good, President Noynoy Aquino said, if used properly.

Well, this country’s “matuwid na daan” is still littered with pork barrel.

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 agents tried to serve warrants of arrest the Sandiganbayan against former Cebu fourth district congresswoman Clavel Asas-Martinez, her son Celestino “Tining” Martinez III and former Bogo municipal treasurer Rhett Minguez.

But the Sandiganbayan has already suspended the serving of the warrants, Bogo City Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr. insisted.

Well, the warrant is not dead, it’s simply in a state of suspended animation.
